Wildcats Outlast Raiders, Earn District Finals Berth March 6, 2014 Newark defeated league-foe Reynoldsburg for the 3rd time this season and when it mattered most: in the tournament. The 'Cats weathered a rough 3rd quarter to advance to the OHSAA D-1 District Final. After leading 30-19 at half and being up by 13 early in the 3rd, Reynoldsburg stormed back into the game, taking a 44-43 lead into the final quarter. It was the clutch 4th quarter play of Jordan Dartis and the 'Cats Free Throw shooting that ultimately gave them the W. Dartis knocked in 13 of his game-high 20 points in the 4th, 9 of which came at the line. Newark shot 30-37 overall from the charity stripe. Newark (#5) now plays Dublin Coffman (#9) in the District Final on Saturday, March 8th, 10 am at the Fairgrounds Coliseum in Columbus.
Zanesville Bounces Westerville South With Strong 4th Quarter Effort March 6, 2014 Zanesville's strong 4th quarter and presence on the boards gave them a 62-51 win over Westerville South to advance to a District Final. The Blue Devils (#4) owned a 20-11 advantage through 1, but it was the Wildcats (#11) who enjoyed an 8-0 run to bring them back into the game. The Blue Devils and Wildcats traded leads consistently through the 2nd and 3rd quarters. Junior Malik Bocook changed the tide of the game, though, early in the 4th with a thunderous tomahawk slam dunk. The Blue Devils' energy ramped up after Bocook's jam and they proceeded to outscore Westerville South 16-6 in the final 8 minutes. Senior JT McFarland led in scoring with 16. The ECOL Champion Blue Devils advance to the District Finals to play the OCC-Ohio Champion Pickerington Central Tigers (#6) on Saturday, March 8th, 4 pm at the Fairgrounds Coliseum in Columbus.
Muskies Steamroll Carrollton, Will Face Rival Cambridge in District Final March 3, 2014 John Glenn (#2) steamrolled over Carrollton (#13) in their District Semifinal, 60-41, to earn a shot at the District Championship. The Muskies held a 4-point lead through 1 quarter but a strong showing in the 2nd gave them a 12 point lead heading into halftime. They consistently built their lead thanks to prolific 3-point shooting and holding Carrollton to just 6 points in the 3rd. Sophomore Drew Rackley led in scoring with 16 but scorers weren't hard to find for the Muskies as just about every player that saw time was a contributor. John Glenn plays rival Cambridge in the District Final on Wednesday, March 4th, 7 p.m. at Zanesville H.S. The Muskies def. the Bobcats at Cambridge back in December, 60-38.
Philo Loses Double OT Heartbreaker to Steubenville March 3, 2014 Philo (#7) gave Steubenville (#3) an incredible fight but their upset attempt fell just short in double overtime, 71-69. The Big Red led by 8 at half but the Electrics surged to start the 2nd half, taking the lead halfway through the 3rd. Teams swapped leads throughout regulation and both overtimes. Senior Zak Sheridan hit a triple with 17 seconds left in the 2nd OT to tie the game at 69 but a Steubenville fadeaway jumper swished through as the clock nearly struck zero. A last second full-court heave couldn't find the net for Philo as their season came to an end in the Division 2 District Semifinal at Ohio University - Eastern. Senior Chase Hambel led all scorers with 26 and crossed the 1,000 point threshold for his career. The Electrics finish their 2013-14 campaign with a 14-10 record.
Zanesville Eliminates Tri-Valley in Tournament Rematch March 3, 2014 Zanesville (#4) took down Tri-Valley (#26) in a rivalry rematch, 52-33, to advance to the OHSAA D-1 District Semifinals. The game went similar to the regular season matchup: close to begin, but with Zanesville pulling away to win big. Teams traded punches in quarter 1. Tied at 9, Zanesville scored 6 quick points before the end of the quarter and continued to significantly build their lead throughout the rest of the game. Tri-Valley ends their season with a 16-8 record. Senior Avery Williams led the Dawgs in scoring with 16 and had 8 rebounds. For the Blue Devils, Senior Thomas Wibbeler was the spark. He drilled 3 of his 4 attempts from beyond the arc which led to his game-high 17 points. Zanesville advances to play #11 Westerville South on Tuesday, March 3rd, 7 p.m. at Westerville Central H.S.
